Birthing Unit, Obstetrics

About

Pregnancy and birth are unique for each woman. The well-being of the mother and infant are dependent upon each other as both adjust to the many physical, psychological and social changes after birth. Combined Care means one nurse cares for both you and your baby together. Your baby will leave the birthing unit with you and go directly to your room where, together with the help of your nurse and family you care for your baby until discharge home. This will help you quickly establish a bond with your baby and gain confidence in parenting skills. Sleep/wake patterns are learned and adapted to by parents when the baby is kept at the mother’s bedside. Health teaching about baby care is done as the need arises. You will be given a discharge planner when you are admitted, please use this resource to identify any learning needs you may have. Your nurse will review this package with you prior to discharge.

Prenatal Classes are offered through a partnership with Markham Prenatal (MPNE)

Obstetrical Triage Unit

The Obstetrical Triage is located just outside the Birthing Unit. All women attending the Birthing Unit for care will be assessed in the Obstetrical Triage Unit. The unit is staffed by expert labour and delivery nurses who have ready access to your Primary Care Provider. If you are a client of the Barrie Midwives, you should follow their process for contacting your Midwife. Your Midwife is able to consult with the staff Obstetricians as needed.

Visitors to the Obstetrical Triage are restricted to the ‘birth partner’ only.

Birthing Unit Accommodations & Procedures

The Birthing Unit features eight private Labour-Birthing Rooms. Each room is equipped with a birthing bed, fetal monitor, and infant care centre.

All rooms have their own bathroom/shower. A whirlpool tub is also available during labour.

During your prenatal visits, your Physician/Midwife will discuss the different options available to help you with your pain control. These range from breathing and relaxation techniques to injections, epidurals, and inhalation gas. One to one support is provided by a trained and educated Registered Nurse during active labour and birth.

Your baby’s birth is a unique and individual experience. Any special requests should be discussed with your physician/midwife. Significant others are encouraged to participate in the birthing experience as desired. RVH’s Birthing Unit offers caesarean sections with a state of the art operating and recovery room.
