The BCG Treatment Clinic is a clinic where patients with bladder cancer receive their BCG Treatment. BCG stands for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, and it is a type of immunotherapy. Patients need a referral from their urologist to access this clinic.

The General Hematology Clinic is a clinic where patients with non-cancer blood disorders can be supported, followed and treated by a specialized team. The Clinic will coordinate testing, care, and referrals needed to follow-up on the needs of the patients in the clinic.

Blood tests are used to track your health before, during and after treatment. Patients of the Hudson Regional Cancer Program have access to the Lab within the Hudson Regional Cancer Centre at RVH. For patients on chemotherapy or systemic therapy, you may be asked to complete blood tests before an appointment with your cancer doctor (oncologist). Please ask your Care Team on when you need to complete your blood test before your appointment, and whether you need to complete it at RVH or a lab closer to your home.

A bone marrow biopsy is a procedure to remove a bone marrow sample. The sample is used to confirm a blood cancer diagnosis or a bone marrow disorder.

The Breast Diagnostic Assessment Program (DAP) is a clinic where patients with a confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer be connected to a surgeon. Patients who receive diagnostic testing at RVH for their suspected breast cancer with a confirmed pathology for breast cancer, will automatically be referred into this Program. The benefit of patients enrolled in the Breast DAP include faster access to a surgical consult as well as support from a Clerical Navigator who can explain current and next steps in their cancer journey.

The Cancer and Palliative Inpatient Unit provides inpatient symptom management and palliation for cancer patients. Patients who need to be in a hospital setting before and after receiving treatment (for example, radiation, chemotherapy, or stem cell transplant) may also stay on this Unit. Depending on bed capacity and demand at the hospital, not all patients admitted to the Cancer and Palliative Inpatient Unit have a diagnosis of cancer or have a palliative (non-curative) medical diagnosis.

A clinical trial is a research study to find out if a new treatment provides better outcomes than the existing standard of care–the best available known treatment. For some patients, a clinical trial gives them access to other treatment options. At the Cancer Centre, our Clinical Trials team can help you find out if there are clinical trials that are suited for you. If you are on a cancer clinical trial, a clinical trials nurse will be helping you during and after the trial is finished.

Colposcopy (pronounced: kol-POS-kuh-pee) is a procedure to closely examine your cervix, vagina and vulva for signs of disease. During colposcopy, your doctor uses a special instrument called a colposcope. You may need a colposcopy if your Pap test result is abnormal, or your doctor see some usual changes in your pelvic area.

The Gyn (Gynaecologic) Oncology Diagnostic Assessment Program (Gyn DAP) is a clinic where patients with a suspicion of a gynaecological cancer can be supported with further testing to rule out or to confirm if they have cancer. Gynaecologic cancer includes cancers of the cervix, ovarian, uterus, endometrium, vagina, and vulva.

The Multidisciplinary Skin Clinic is a clinic for patients with a diagnosis of complex non-melanoma skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. At the clinic the patient will be given more information about their skin cancer. The patient will also meet with a surgeon and a radiation oncologist on the same visit, learn about both surgical and radiation treatment options, and select the treatment that best suit their needs and health goals.

PICC (peripherally inserted central venous catheter) line insertion is done at RVH Imaging. PICC lines may be removed at the Chemotherapy Unit at the Cancer Centre with a physician order.

The Radiation Treatment Unit provides radiation therapy for cancer patients. The Unit has 4 Linear Accelerators (treatment machines), a brachytherapy suite, and a CT Simulation machine used for treatment planning. A team of radiation oncologists, radiation nurses, radiation therapists, and physicists work together to provide radiation planning and treatment, symptom support, and post-treatment follow up and care.

The Skin Biopsy Clinic is a service to confirm whether your skin lesion is cancerous. At this clinic, a physical exam and a sample of your skin lesion is taken. The entire appointment is about 15-30 minutes. Please come 30 minutes before your appointment time. Do not put any creams or moisturizers on the skin lesion the day of your appointment.

Spiritual Care Providers connects us with the things that matter deeply; that which strengthens us, helps us cope, and gives us hope. You don’t have to be religious to benefit from spiritual care.

The Spiritual Care room and the multi-faith chapel is located in Level 1 of RVH (not inside the Cancer Centre). No registration is needed to use the Spiritual Care room and the multi-faith chapel. Walk-ins welcome.

Telemedicine means having your doctor’s visit using video instead of in-person. Rather than coming to the Cancer Centre, patients can go to a Telemedicine site closer to their home (your local hospital for example). Your care team will meet with you through video conference rather than in person. Please discuss Telemedicine with your care team to see if this is an option for your appointments.

Therapeutic Phlebotomy is the removal of blood to decrease the amount of red blood cells or iron in the blood. A referral from an oncologist (cancer doctor) is needed to have an appointment in the Cancer Centre’s Therapeutic Phlebotomy Clinic.

The Toxicity Assessment Clinic (TAC) helps cancer patients to manage cancer-related symptoms during active treatment. The Clinic is staffed by doctors and nurses with a specialty in cancer symptom management. You can access this Clinic by calling our Cancer Symptom Hotline. You will first be assessed over the phone. We will do our best to help you with your symptoms over the phone. If your symptoms need an in-person assessment or treatment, we will ask you to come to the Toxicity Assessment Clinic.

The Well Follow Up Clinic is for cancer patients who have finished active treatment and their health needs are best met in a follow-up clinic setting. This clinic supports a cancer patient’s transition to primary care providers through a supportive surveillance (monitoring) program. Access to this clinic is by referral from your oncologist at the Hudson Regional Cancer Program.
