The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act 2005 and the Integrated Accessibility Standards, Ontario Regulation 191/11 requires each hospital to prepare an annual accessibility plan to consult with persons with disabilities in the preparation of this plan and to make the plan public. RVH not only posts its Accessibility Plan but has mandatory annual accessibility training for all staff, physicians and volunteers.

Helping you get to RVH
RVH has 67 barrier-free parking spaces available to patients and visitors who have a valid Accessible Parking Permit or who are visiting the health centre for dialysis. Please refer to the list below for barrier-free parking space locations or view the RVH barrier-free parking map

LINX provides 60 minute service from Penetanguishene to RVH Monday to Friday: The Southbound trips Start at 6 a.m. from Penetanguishene, operating hourly with the last bus leaving at 6 p.m. from Penetanguishene. The Northbound trips start at 6:30 a.m. from RVH operating hourly with the last bus leaving at 6:30 p.m. from RVH
Specialized Transit is a door-to-door shared ride accessible public transit service intended for persons unable to use Barrie Transit’s Conventional accessible fixed route system due to a disability. Click here for more information.
Week day assistance from Entrance Attendants is available at the Main and Atrium entrances. Attendants will greet patients and visitors, retrieve a wheelchair if required and direct you to the information desk for information. They will direct vehicles to the appropriate parking lot and entrance as well as explain parking pass and payment options.
- Main entrance from 6:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
- Atrium entrance from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Getting Around RVH
Information desks are located at the Main, Atrium and Simcoe (level 1) entrances. RVH volunteers are available at Information Desks to assist patients and visitors by providing directions or helping to locate patients.

- Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Staxi Patient Transfer Chairs provide temporary transportation patient and visitors with reduced mobility. Staxi chairs are available at the Main, Atrium and Simcoe (level 1) entrances.
The chair features a fail-safe braking system – the chair will only move when the brake is engaged by the person pushing the chair from behind. The patient can easily enter from the side and the height of the back of the chair is designed to afford the person pushing a comfortable position to engage the chair, reducing stress on their back.
Staxi chair accessibility and safety features:
- Fail-safe braking system
- Lifting armrest – A patient or visitor can easily enter from the side of the chair
- Chair height – The chair is designed to have a comfortable pushing position
- 600 pound weight capacity
- Safe, secure and quiet patient transportation
- Anti-microbial cushions
Traditional wheelchairs are available at Information desks at the Main, Atrium and Simcoe (level 1) entrances for patients who require leg extensions, oxygen tank holders, IV pumps or the ability to navigate in the chairs by themselves.
While you’re visiting or staying at RVH
If a patient or visitor requires over-the-phone translation, please contact RVH Locating by calling (705) 728-9090 ext. 0 or dial ‘0’ on any RVH phone. A locating representative will assist you by transferring you to the translation service provider.
A Pocket Talker is a portable amplifier that can be used for one-on-one communication with someone who has a hearing impairment. Pocket Talkers can be requested in any department and are currently available in the following departments:
- Off-Site Dialysis
- Outpatient Cancer Centre
- Pre-Surgery/Surgery Treatment Clinic Registration
- Surgery/Central Registration
- Women’s Imaging
Each department within the health centre has access to a Hearing Loss Communication Tool Kit providing staff members with more information about your hearing loss or impairment enabling them to better communicate with you. It may be helpful prior to arriving at RVH to review the toolkit and complete the sections which apply to you.
