RVH’s Centre for Education and Research officially opened in May 2018. This space is home to the simulation lab, classrooms, a mock training room, research ethics, education and research offices and a student lounge, making it a multi-functional, purpose-built space. This dedicated space provides an environment to validate and explore best practices, while clearly demonstrating RVH’s commitment to both teaching and research.
Clinical Simulation
In 2012, RVH formally launched a Clinical Simulation program. Clinical simulation has quickly become the gold standard for medical education by mimicking real-life medical scenarios within a risk-free learning environment. Simulation has been proven to reduce medical errors and improve patient safety by facilitating professional development and inter-professional collaboration. By creating interprofessional training opportunities, simulation will act as a catalyst in building a culture of trust and respect within teams. Improved collaboration among health professionals and enhanced clinical skills will serve as a means to improve quality and patient outcomes. High-fidelity scenarios include: Respiratory Failure, Cardiac Arrest, and Trauma.
In the SIM lab we currently have 3 mannequins: adult, child, and paediatric. Each comes equipped with:
- iStan wireless patient simulators
- Instructor’s laptop
- Muse operating software
- TouchPro wireless patient monitor
- Dozens of Simulated Clinical Cases
- Simulator tool kit
Clinical Simulation Offerings
Family Medicine Resident Simulation Training
Over the course of the family medicine residency program, RVH provides residents with educational sessions to enhance their clinical and communication skills.
Code Blue Education
With the help of a Clinical Educator, Mock Code Blue sessions run on different wards to aide in advancing first line responder skills.
Life Saving Drugs (LSD) and Defibrillation
RVH provides this mandatory education to nursing staff which covers medical policies and procedures, several of which are related to ACLS.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
Numerous ACLS courses are offered throughout the year. With our interactive SIM Lab, the participants are able to demonstrate skills on high-fidelity mannequins. Registration is open to RVH and non-RVH staff and physicians.
We also offer advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) training sessions that can be brought right to your doorstep. Our highly skilled ACLS trainers are equipped with the latest techniques and tools to provide your team with the knowledge and confidence needed to respond effectively in critical situations.
Our private training sessions are tailored to the specific needs of your groups, ensuring that your staff are well-prepared to handle cardiac emergencies with precision and skill. Whether you work in a medical setting, a corporate office, or an industrial facility, our trainers will work closely with you to create a customized training program that fits your schedule and requirements.
If you are interested in organizing an ACLS Certification course, please reach out to medicaleducation@rvh.on.ca
