Interventional Radiology and Angiography

About

Interventional Radiology (IR) is a specialty within radiology that uses imaging guidance (fluoroscopy, ultrasound or CT) to perform minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Interventional radiology procedures have been shown to have fewer complications, high success rates, and allow the patient to return to their regular activities quickly.

All of our technologists are registered with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario.

Who We Are

All of our technologists are registered with the
College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario.

The Interventional Radiology team treats many areas of disease, including various peripheral arterial/vascular disease, various types of cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma, osteoid osteoma, and renal cell carcinoma, uterine fibroids, varicoceles, hemodialysis (including blocked arterio-venous grafts and fistulae and placement of hemodialysis catheters), joint pain, vertebral fractures, blocked kidneys and bile ducts, acute bleeding from various diseases from the chest, abdomen, pelvis, or upper/lower extremities, as well as traumatic causes of bleeding, among many other procedures.

The team also places various venous access devices including PICC lines, port-a-catheters, and tunnelled venous catheters. As well, Interventional procedures are also used in the diagnosis of a number of diseases, with procedures including biopsies, and diagnostic angiography and venography.

RVH is very fortunate to have the expertise of seven interventional radiologists whom have a passion for the profession, lead our team and provide patients with a wide range of treatment options. The Interventional Radiology team includes a dedicated group of technologists and nurses who have had additional training specific to the field of Interventional Radiology.

The Interventional Radiology team at RVH provides IR services to the entire LHIN of North Simcoe/Muskoka. The health centre has two fully equipped interventional radiology suites as well as a dedicated nursing area for pre and post care.

Interventional Radiology Pre-Procedure Patient Preparation Instructions

Patient instructions for procedural preparation will be provided by our department to your referring physician. For those patients who require an interventional radiology consultation prior to their procedure, their pre-procedure preparation instructions may come directly from the interventional radiologist.

Most procedures will require the following:

Pre-procedural bloodwork within two weeks of the procedure.
Discontinuing anticoagulant and/or antiplatelet medications – after consultation with referring physician or interventional radiologist.
Specific instructions regarding eating and drinking.
A responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you overnight.

Please contact your referring physician for your specific instructions and for stopping any medications.

Please bring to your appointment:

  • Your health card.
  • A list of your current medications with the dosages and last time they were taken.
  • A list of allergies.

Patients will register in Imaging Services located on level 2.
