Obstetrics Unit

About

The Obstetrics Unit assists new families following the birth of their baby by educating them on how to care for both mother and baby which prepares them to be discharged home. You will be given a discharge planner when you are admitted, please use this resource to identify any learning needs you may have. Your nurse will review this package with you prior to discharge. Every baby is provided with a crib card courtesy of Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, this card contains valuable information about your newborn as well as community resources. Please ensure you take this card with you when you leave the hospital.

This unit also provides care for undelivered mothers who encounter complications in their pregnancy and require hospitalization.
After birth, you and your baby will be transferred from the Birthing Unit to the Obstetrics Unit. The usual length of stay for vaginal deliveries is 24-48 hours. For caesarean sections the length of stay is usually 2- 3 days, depending on the needs of mother and baby.

Visiting Hours

Visiting is restricted to 2 at a time including your birth partner (must be 16 years and older).
Your birth partner may stay with you 24 hours a day.

All visitors must wash their hands prior to handling the new baby.

Guidelines During Your Stay

These guidelines apply to ward, semi-private and private rooms.

Your birth partner may stay with you and the baby 24 hours a day:

  • Visitors with colds or who are unwell are asked to refrain from visiting the health center
  • Sleeping accommodations are not provided in semi-private or ward accommodations
  • Folding gravity chairs are permitted if your birthing partner wishes to spend the night
  • All visitors must wash their hands prior to handling the new baby
  • If you are sharing a room, please consider your roommate’s need for privacy and rest
  • Upon entering the unit be sure your phone is on quiet or vibrate

Directions

From the Main Entrance, follow the Blue Navigation Line to the Atrium (Orange) Elevators. Take the elevator to the 4th floor and turn right to get to the Obstetrics Unit.
