Save a Life.

STOP THE BLEED® is the result of a collaborative effort led by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) to bring knowledge of bleeding control to the public. In 2017, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre became the first hospital in Canada to offer this training. Since our designation as a Level III Trauma Centre, RVH is bringing the STOP THE BLEED® program closer to home.

Massive bleeding from ANY cause, (such as an active shooter, explosive event, motor vehicle accident, home, or industrial event) where bleeding becomes a concern and where there is a delayed response can cause death. Victims of these events or injuries can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding, within five or ten minutes. Emergency services response time is 8 minutes on average.

STOP THE BLEED® is an initiative of the American College of Surgeons and the Hartford Consensus that provides civilian bystanders the skills and basic tools to stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency situation and save lives. This course is similar to how the public learns and performs CPR, the public should learn proper bleeding control techniques, including how to use their hands for dressing, and tourniquets.

Our certified instructors offer STOP THE BLEED® training to the general public, high school students and people that work in public areas or venues who may be a first person on scene until a first responder arrives (e.g., security, event staff, community workers).
