About 10% of newborns are born premature or require specialized care in a Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The state of the art NICU at RVH is a 12-basinette unit with 2 infant care centers for stabilization of newborn infants. We care for newborns 30 weeks gestation and greater, as well as any newborn that requires special care and expertise.
If your newborn has special medical needs, your newborn will be admitted to the NICU. This highly specialized unit is staffed with neonatologists, paediatricians, neonatal nurses, and other health care professionals. The NICU at RVH is recognized for its capability in managing a range of newborn emergencies, while allowing the opportunity for parents to maintain an important bond with their newborn and full participation in their baby's care. Our interprofessional team is responsive to the varied emotional needs of the family.
We are capable of providing care to the majority of newborns with special needs. Our facility is a referral Centre for the surrounding area. Any newborn that may require extra care not available at RVH will be referred by the Physician to a Level 3 Nursery such as The Hospital for Sick Children.
