​Volunteer at RVH

 

The Volunteer Resources Department in an integral partner in RVH's patient-centered MY CARE philosophy. Over 800 volunteers provide over 110,000 hours in dedicated time in various capacities in our health centre. Our focus is to ensure our volunteers positively affect the patient experience, that they have purposeful work and feel like they make a difference in our health centre and in our community. Results from the recent Volunteer Opinion Survey conducted by the Professional Administrators of Volunteer Resources of Ontario show that 98% of volunteers would recommend RVH as a great place to volunteer.

    How to become a volunteer

     

    A minimum commitment of 6 months, one shift per week is required.

    To become a volunteer at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre you must:

      • •  Be entering into grade 11 or older
    • •  Submit an online Volunteer Expression of Interest form or contact the Volunteer Department directly
    • •  Attend an in person interview

    Once ACCEPTED you must:

    • •  Submit two references. A work ethic reference by someone who has known you 2 years or longer 
    • •  Complete the 2-Step Tuberulosis (TB) test
    • •  Attend a scheduled orientation
    • •  Submit a clear Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

     

    Please keep in mind that while we strive to accept as many applicants as possible, there are a limited number of positions, so regretfully not everyone who submits an application will be contacted for an interview.

    Opportunities

    Make a difference in the lives of our patients. Whether you want to volunteer directly with patients or support their care at RVH, we have an opportunity that is right for you.

    ​Patient Experience

    RVH is looking for volunteers to enhance the patient experiene by greeting and familiarizing patients on non-clinical aspects related to their stay at RVH.  Applicants should be outgoing and have a high level of empathy and compassion towards patients.  Applicants must exhibit RVH's core vales of:  Work Together, Respect All, Think Big, Own It and Care.

    Information and Way Finding

    Provide directions, information and way finding to patients and visitors. Assist patients by walking them to their destinations. Applicants must have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

    Retail & Fundraising

    Assist our customers in a retail setting in Victoria's Gift Shop or in a friendly restaurant type environment in Cafe Royale. Applicants should have excellent customer service skills and enjoy a service industry type setting.

    Administration

    Assist staff with a variety of administrative tasks.  Each area offers a unique role and applicants should be mature, have good organizational skills and attention to detail.

    Research

    Volunteer for the Conduct of Experimental Studies (VforCES) is a volunteer service developed by RVH's Chief Research Scientist to facilitate the conduct of research studies.  Volunteers assist in the pre-screening of patients for eligibility for assigned research studies.

    Outpatient and Visitor Support

    Volunteers support patients and family members from throughout their visit in Registration, Clinic and Waiting Rooms, at Information Desks and throughout the hospital to provide wayfinding and escorting.  Applicants must have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

    Pet Therapy Program

    We welcome certified St. John Ambulance and Therapeutic Paws of Canada (TPOC) Pet Therapy Volunteers.  To have your pet certified, contact St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dog Program and TPOC for information.
