Screening Programs

Ontario Breast Screening Program

Screening Initiation Average risk women should begin screening with mammography at age 50. High risk women should begin screening with mammography and MRI at age 30.
Screening Interval Screening should be completed every 2 years for average risk women and every year for high risk women.
Screening Cessation Screening may be discontinued at age 74 for average women and age 69 for high risk women.

Ontario Cervical Screening Program

Screening Initiation Women should begin screening at age 21 if they are or have been sexually active. This includes intercourse, as well as digital or oral sexual activity involving the genital area with a partner of either gender.
Screening Interval If cytology is normal, screening should be completed every 3 years. The absence of T zone is not a reason to repeat a Pap test earlier than the recommended interval.
Screening Cessation Screening may be discountinued at the age of 70 if there is an adequate negative cytology screening history in the previous 10 years (i.e. 3 or more negative cytology tests).

Colon Cancer Check

Screening Initiation Average risk men and women should begin screening with a fecal occult blood test at age 50. High risk men and women should begin screening with colonoscopy at age 50 or 10 years earlier than the age their first degree relative was diagnosed (whichever occurs first).
Screening Interval Screening should be completed every 2 years with fecal occult blood test for average risk men and women.
Screening Cessation Screening may be discontinued for men and women at age 74.
