The Simcoe County Preschool Speech and Language Program provides speech, language and communication assessment, treatment, consultation and education services to infants, toddlers and preschoolers in Simcoe County. The Royal Victoria Hospital of Barrie serves as the lead agency for this program.

Services are provided on a variety of models, e.g., intervention based education, direct and mediator therapy, consultation and in the location most appropriate for the individual child and family, including, daycare, family home, hospital clinic, etc. Additionally, public awareness, prevention and early identification activities round out the services offered.

Referral Instructions
Families, physicians, childcare providers etc. can refer for services. The intake worker will gather basic information from the person making the referral and mail a background information package for the child’s family to fill out which provides information to best plan the assessment.

Simcoe Muskoka Parry Sound Infant Hearing Program

The Simcoe Muskoka Parry Sound Infant Hearing Program provides Universal Newborn Hearing Screening in hospitals and community clinics to infants residing in Simcoe County, Muskoka or the District of Parry Sound. Additionally, the program provides specialized infant audiological assessment services to babies requiring follow-up, based on screening results and monitors high risk infants for progressive hearing loss through the audiology service. Communication Development Services, including Auditory Verbal Therapy, American Sign Language and a Dual Approach, are available to infants and preschool children diagnosed with Permanent Hearing Loss and who meet the eligibility criteria. Brief Social Work support is available at the time of diagnosis to assist families with the diagnosis and choosing a communication intervention approach.

Locations

Hospital Screening is carried out prior to the newborn’s discharge at the birthing hospital. Community screening clinics are held at various locations throughout Simcoe and Muskoka Parry Sound for infants not screened before discharge and those requiring further screening.

Audiology and other support services are located at the Royal Victoria Hospital , 201 Georgian Drive in Barrie.

Referral Instructions
Any parents whose infant did not receive a pre-discharge birth screen may contact the program to book a community screen. This screening should be done before a baby is one month old.

Simcoe Muskoka Parry Sound Blind Low Vision Early Intervention Program

The Simcoe Muskoka Parry Sound Blind Low Vision Early Intervention Program provides assessment and intervention services through and Early Childhood Vision Consultant for infants and preschool children who are Blind or Low Vision as diagnosed by an ophthalmologist. Both Child and Family Intervention Services and Childcare Consultation are available. Additionally, the program provides a Family Support Worker to the families of eligible children where indicated.

Location:  The Simcoe Muskoka Parry Sound Blind Low Vision Early Intervention Program is a community based program offering child intervention services in the environment most appropriate to the needs of the child.

Days of Operation: Monday to Friday

Referral Instructions: Families, physicians, optometrists, Early Interventionists etc, may refer the child to the program however written diagnosis from an ophthalmologist confirming the child is blind or low vision is required to receive services. When low vision/blindness is suspected and families are having challenges accessing a diagnosis the program will attempt to assist the family in accessing the necessary service. Upon referral, The intake worker will gather basic information from the person making the referral and mail a background information package for the child’s family to fill out which provides information to best plan the assessment.

Occupational Therapy - Pediatric

The Pediatric Occupational Therapy Services provides assessment, treatment, consultation and education services to infants, toddlers and preschoolers in Simcoe County when there are concerns regarding fine-motor or sensory development Services are provided on a variety of models, e.g., intervention based education, mediator therapy, consultation, and in the location most appropriate for the individual child and family, e.g., daycare, family home, hospital clinic etc. Additionally, public awareness, prevention and early identification activities round out services offered

Paediatric Feeding & Swallowing Team

The pediatric feeding and swallowing team assesses and treats Simcoe County infants, toddlers and preschool children with feeding and swallowing difficulties. These difficulties include trouble sucking and swallowing, gagging and coughing while eating, lack of growth or weight gain or other medically related feeding disorders. The team consists of an Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist and Dietitian.

Referrals can be made by the child’s family doctor or paediatrican. All referrals will be screened for eligibility.

Neonatal Follow Up Clinic

The Neonatal Follow Up Clinic at The Royal Victoria Hospital provides follow up services to low birth weight and high risk infants cared for in the hospital’s Special Care Nursery. The Clinic’s aim is to enhance the quality of life for these children and their families through early intervention and to contribute to the care provided in the Special Care Nursery. The team consists of a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Language Pathologist and Registered Nurse and Paediatrician.

Audiology
 
Audiologists are skilled professionals who assess for and rehabilitate hearing problems for people of all ages. The Audiologists at RVH perform hearing assessments, hearing aid evaluations, central auditory processing assessments, auditory brain stem response (ABR) assessments (sedated and non-sedated) and electronystagmography (ENG).

Physicians referral required. ENG assessment requires specialist referral and access is restricted to residents of Simcoe County.

Hearing Instrument Dispensing

The Hearing Instrument Dispenser sells, services and repairs hearing aids and FM systems and provides counseling for hearing aid users and also assists families in coping with the effects of hearing loss.
