Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre

On September 29th 2005, the Honourable David Caplan of the Ontario Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Renewal officially announced the support of the Province of Ontario for the Royal Victoria Hospital and its Phase 1 plan of the RVH Expansion which includes the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. This cancer centre will serve the residents of Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka (the new LHIN 12). Click here to see the Green Light announcement.

WHAT WILL THE REGIONAL CANCER BE

Upon opening, the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre (SMRCC) will offer area residents a full service cancer centre “closer to home”. The new outpatient building will be built as a separate wing on the North West side of the existing hospital. It will be physically attached and interconnected with the hospital and has been planned in a way that it will enable future expansion with relative ease. The new cancer centre will be three stories high with each level planned with the patient as the focus. Level one will house the Radiation Therapy Program, level two will include the supportive care program and outpatient clinics, and level three will accommodate the new chemotherapy suite and the clinical trials program.

The Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre (SMRCC) will feature:

  • Three radiation treatment suites will allow patient to receive treatment by a Radiation Oncologist. A CT Simulator will help doctors plan for radiation treatment delivery;
  • Two large outpatient clinic areas for patient assessment and consultation;
  • A dedicated supportive care area allowing patient’s and families access to Social Workers, Cinical Dietitians, Physiotherapists and other allied health disciplines;
  • A large chemotherapy suite with three walls of windows overlooking Little Lake, allowing patients receiving chemotherapy to enjoy the breath-taking views of the region; and
  • A dedicated Clinical Trials area will facilitate clinical research studies involving new cancer drugs and other therapies to improve the outcome and quality of life for cancer patients.

The development of the plan for the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre has included Cancer Care Ontario, Physicians and Staff from RVH, and regional stakeholders involved in the care of cancer patient and their families and of course the architects, engineers and quantity surveyors. The functional program and preliminary design documentation has been completed and submitted to the Ministry of Health for approval. Once approval has been received, a general contractor will be hired and construction will begin. The project is estimated to cost $56.1 million dollars of which $15.6 must be raised by communities across the region.
