23^rd Annual Crystal Classic

The Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, Ontario has embarked on a $400 million expansion – the largest capital project in the history of Simcoe Muskoka. The Phase 1 Expansion Project will transform healthcare for the people of Simcoe and Muskoka and provide greater access to care for the nearly half a million people living in the region. With a team of more than 280 skilled physicians, 2,300 caring staff members and 1,100 volunteers, RVH provides healthcare specializing in Cancer Care, Surgical Services, Critical Care, Mental Health Rehabilitation Services, as well as Women and Children's programs.

People from throughout the region have already contributed more than $34 million to the hospital’s “I Believe” fundraising campaign. In addition, the City of Barrie has committed $52.5 million, the County of Simcoe $20 million and the District of Muskoka $3 million to the project. Individuals, businesses and all levels of government have acknowledged the need for bringing care closer to home.

The Crystal Classic, Royal Victoria Hospital’s premiere annual event, has raised more than $1.5 million since 1987, and this year, the event will continue to support the Phase 1 Expansion Project, which includes the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. The cancer centre, set to open in 2012, will feature four radiation suites and will log more than 60,000 patient visits in its first year of operation alone. The entire project when complete, will add 1,200 skilled health professionals to the RVH team. This project is well underway and will be a tremendous boost to the region’s economy, but more importantly, it will bring quality, accessible healthcare closer to home.

The Fund Raiser – The 23^rd Annual RVH Crystal Classic

The 23rd annual Crystal Classic, held June 6th and 7th, was another huge success raising more than $155,000 for Royal Victoria Hospital.

Presented by BMO Bank of Montreal, this event has raised nearly $2 million for Royal Victoria Hospital over the years. More recently, funds from the event support the Phase 1 Expansion Project, which includes the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. This redevelopment, the largest capital project in the region’s history, will double the size of the existing hospital and is already more than 40 per cent complete.

Guests at the gala evening dined under the stars at the beautiful Tangle Creek Golf Club and bid on fabulous auction items such as a ski dream experience at Sun Peaks Resort with Olympic Gold Medalist Nancy Greene as well as a one week vacation home to Silver Star Ski Resort courtesy of SilverStar Vacation Homes.

The following day nearly 300 golfers teed off under sunny skies at the Barrie Country Club. Special thanks to golf chair Bill Wogden and the members of the Country Club for hosting the tournament.

While the windy weather offered some challenges for golfers, the participants enjoyed wings courtesy of Wild Wing South Barrie, refreshments courtesy of Coca-Cola, Jugo Juice, Starbucks and massages courtesy of the staff from Barrie Sports Medicine.
